Within the next year, this California-based chain is expected to open a
new franchise in Knoxville, Tennessee, with 9 more restaurants in the
area by 2021. Currently, there are over 500 Del Taco franchises in operation
across 16 states.
While neither the exact location nor the franchisee has been identified,
one thing is clear—Del Taco is trying to aggressively expand into
the South. The company has stated that they are also looking at Georgia
and New Jersey as new markets. Based on the success of this franchise
on the west coast, Del Taco’s upcoming expansion should hold exciting
opportunities for future franchisees.
The Del Taco Story
Del Taco was founded in the small town of Yermo, California back in 1964.
The original menu included tacos, tostadas, fries and hamburgers, each
of which cost less than a quarter. The chain saw huge growth throughout
the 1970’s, with more than 100 restaurants in operation by 1978.
After a great deal of success in the 1980’s, Del Taco acquired a
rival restaurant chain called Naugles, which was a substantial increase
in the number of restaurants and geographic reach of the company.
The 1990’s and early 2000’s saw the company tweak and perfect
it’s business model. By the year 2006, the 500th Del Taco franchise had opened.
